I was inspired to write my new poem, “We, the Love(for)lorn” after seeing the film, “Sylvia” (Gwyneth Paltrow playing Sylvia Plath). It had me thinking, “what is it about us that’s brings us no luck in love?”, “do we conjure these failed partners?”, “what is it that pulls them magnetically into our sphere?”

I recently recorded her poem, “A Birthday Present” for The Poetry Foundation and it continually haunts me (and especially after hearing her read it herself) for its steeliness, landscape of emotion and sober seriousness – the kind that is veiled in surface that belies a resolute mythologizing of death.

The last 6 lines of my poem are a channeling, a summoning of Sylvia through automatic writing.
